Terrell OwensPHILADELPHIA — Terrell Owens’ season is effectively over after an arbitrator ruled Wednesday that the Philadelphia Eagles were justified in suspending him for four games.

Arbitrator Richard Bloch wrote that the Eagles clearly proved that the suspension was justified, and were within their right to pay their All-Pro receiver but not allow him to return “due to the nature of his conduct and its destructive and continuing threat to the team.”

“We couldn’t have written it any better ourselves,” an Eagles official told ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio.

Bloch heard more than 13 hours of testimony last week. Owens’ side argued the penalty is excessive and the Eagles’ decision to deactivate him is too severe. Owens wanted to be reinstated to the Eagles or released so he can sign with another team.

I am glad that the arbitrator ruled in favor for the Eagles. Maybe TO will take some time to think his actions through while he is sitting at home watching the games for the rest of the season.

Doubtful that he will change, but one can hope right?

TO is a great receiver, when he comes to play. Put too often he is running his mouth about his team and the owners and not doing his job. He is paid a ridiculous amount of money to go out and catch passes and the fact that he really only shows up about 50% of the time is just plain stupid.

There is a lot of speculation on who TO will end up with. My beloved Denver Broncos are on the short list of a lot of analyst. I really hope they are wrong.

Mike Shannahan couldn’t put up with Clinton Portis’ antics (which were minor league compared to TO) so who in their right mind would think he could deal with TO???

And then there is that pesky fact of TO bad-mouthing Donovan McNabb. Does anyone really think that Jake Plummer would stand a chance with TO? Get real!

While the talent would be a great addition, the fact that the Broncos are all about the TEAM just doesn’t seem to be a good fit for TO. TO is all about himself.

And let’s not even get started on his agent/loud mouth/worst person who could have TO’s best interest at heart Drew Rosenhaus

I Can’t Go Back to Detroit…

But I can still watch and pay respect to Rosa Parks:

The (Detroit) Free Press will provide live streaming video coverage of Rosa Parks’ funeral Wednesday. The video coverage, produced by WZZM-TV in Battle Creek, will begin at 10 a.m. ET. The funeral begins at 11 a.m.

Ms. Parks’ funreal is being held at Greater Grace, the mammoth church that I used to live a few blocks from. Getting in and out of my neighborhood on a regular Sunday was a chore, I can only imagine what it would be like if I was living there now.

RIP Rosa Parks - 1913 -2005

Is Hip-Hop Ready To Deal With This?

Ξ December 23rd, 2004 | → 0 Comments | ∇ News & Reviews |

DMX

News has it that rapper DMX suffers from Bi-Polar Disorder…which really does explain his erratic behavior.

Is the hip-hop community ready to deal with this? Is it too much to ask these “hardcore gangstas” to deal with mental illness?

Now, BPD does not make X crazy, hell way more folks suffer from it than you would imagine (someone recently suggested that yours truly should be checked out), but is it like the dirty little secret of hip-hop?

About 63% of African Americans believe depression is a sign of weakness and almost 2/3 believe that the condition can be healed through prayer and faith. But self help for a severely mentally ill person is very unlikely. Unfortunately this is compounded by the fact that many minorities are without health insurance. Dr.Wiliam Lawson of Howard University says “Either we’re in such bad shape that we’re all depressed or we’re so resilient that we’re not depressed. The symptoms look the same regardless of culture, so it goes under diagnosed. Too many people believe it’s not a disease and that its a character flaw.”

Will the other rappers embrace X and try to help him or are we destined to hear wack ass rap after wack ass rap dogging him out for being crazy?

The Heart Of High School Football: Friday Night Lights

Ξ October 8th, 2004 | → 1 Comments | ∇ Movie Reviews |

In Odessa, Tx., and just about every small town in Texas, high school football is what makes the town. Back in 1988, The Odessa-Primian Panthers were all that anyone cared about come September. And let’s be honest, its more than likely pretty high on the list of things to do on a Friday night in Odessa in 2004.

Friday Night Lights” tells the true story of this group of high school football players, their coach, their fans and the town. Many have touted this as one of the greatest sports movies to come along in about forever…and I have to agree. Having been involved deep in high school football for many years this movie tells the tale of every small town football team and what it means to be a winner.

The boys of Odessa all have that one shot at fame, that one chance to get out of Odessa. All it takes is superiority on the gridiron. The fan expect nothing less than perfection.

Damn near every man in Odessa walks around with a championship ring on his finger. Fathers push their sons hard. Mothers have dreams of greatness. Uncles allow their nephews to make foolish decisions. The town treats these boys like celebrities.

Coach Cary Gaines, played by Billy Bob Thornton, does his best to teach these boys “to be perfect”. In the end these kids, who all attest to feeling anything but 17-years-old, learn and understand what it means to be perfect. It has nothing to do with making no mistakes, its all about making sure you do your best and give it your all and can hold your head high.

Country music legend Tim McGraw steals the show with his portrayal of the alcoholic father living his dreams through his son. McGraw makes you feel the hopelessness and sense of loss that these young boys live with. McGraws’ Charlie Billingsley has been one of the chosen, having played on a championship Odessa-Primian football team, and now knows what happens when that moment is over.

This is one of those movies that you don’t have to be a sports fan to understand. This movie transcends that and gets down to the true feelings of what high school sports means to so many young men.

When a kid of 17 realizes that his only chance out is gone, he breaks down and cries. In his eyes his world has ended. Football was all he knew how to do.

This is a must see movie for any true fan of high school sports and a must see for those who never understood the power of high school sports.

This is a movie for everyone.

Friday Night Lights” is a definite A in my playbook.

Carmelo Mans Up For His Girl

Ξ September 16th, 2004 | → 29 Comments | ∇ News & Reviews |

Well, well, well…seems my boy Carmelo Anthony showed some heart while chillin’ in the NY with his girl LaLa of MTV VJ fame

From Allhiphop.com:

So Joe Budden is telling this story because he’s wondering if the publicist is telling the real deal. He saw Carmelo last night at Club Babalu. It was Swizz Beatz birthday party, Joe said it was definitely poppin - he kept saying that - with nuff celebrities doing the mingle and move thing. He mentioned that Carmelo Anthony and MTV VJ Lala were there together. If you didn’t know they are a couple - then now you know. So there Carmelo and Lala are, all up in the VIP section having a good time, when this guy named Sugar Ray spots them from across the room. Sugar Ray is Lala’s ex-fiance. The fact that he’s now her ex is no surprise. I remember one day last year, she was hosting an MTV show and the guest mentioned her ring and her new engagement - she didn’t look like she was overjoyed about the situation. .

Sugar Ray and Lala had some words, it was supposed to be a friendly situation. Somewhere along the line things turned foul and Sugar Ray spit in Lala’s face. Carmelo Anthony, who was at the club without bodyguards, got hood with it and started swinging. So these two are fighting, but Sugar Ray was with his Harlem buddies. They jumped in. Now it’s just an all out brawl: tables are being kicked over, chairs being thrown. Joe Budden said the fight went from inside the club.. to the outside.

Apparently Carmelo held his own sans bodyguards and bouncers to stick up for his girl….like any real man should.

Don’t necessarily condone the fightin’ and shit, but stickin up for ya girl earns points like nothing else…

Kanye West Nominated for Gospel CD of the Year?!?!?!

Ξ September 15th, 2004 | → 1 Comments | ∇ News & Reviews |

Uhhhhhh…..OK, so what the hell were these people smoking?????

Is Kanye West’s “The College Dropout” a gospel album? The rapper-producer’s debut album includes one explicitly Christian rap, “Jesus Walks.” But other tracks have lyrics that might offend a congregation, and because of that, some people in the gospel music industry are upset that “The College Dropout” was included on a Stellar Awards ballot for best gospel rap album.

A committee from the Stellar Awards Gospel Music Academy put West’s album on the ballot, which academy members use to select the award nominees.

Hmmm..I can see a nomination for Gospel SONG of the Year (barely, I mean the unedited version of Jesus Walks has a fair amount of cussing in it) but ALBUM of the Year?!?!? C’mon people…did you even listen to any other tracks?!?!?!?!?!

The DEFinition does not define LL

Ξ September 2nd, 2004 | → 3 Comments | ∇ Music Reviews |

(Check out this review and many more over at Blocgritics.org)

Hot beats to get ya moving is what its about these days. The hip-hop landscape is changing…folks are tiring of gansta rap and are looking for players to get back to what it was about in the beginning…beats and spittin’ lyrics.

James Todd Smith (LL Cool J to y’all who don’t know) is doing his part to follow the new trend with his new release The DEFinition. From the outset the beats are what get you going. Head Sprung, Rub My Back…get ya movin’, head bobbin’, booty shakin’ (if my two-year-old daughter is any indication).

The style and beats have a familiar sound…LL teamed up with super producer Timbaland for nearly every track on the CD. It’s nice to hear that Timbo can still put out those hot beats and not have a CD of the same tired beat over and over.

But this is not the “hard as hell” LL that we know from the past. There is no Rock The Bells, there is no I’m Bad, there isn’t even a Round The Way Girl here but there are several “love raps” over nice beats.

LL still has the flow, still has the lyrics…and he more than likely coined the newest “bootylicious” with Apple Cobbler…but the Greatest Of All Time may be losing some of his shine and glimmer.

I would still give this CD 3.5 stars… it is LL Cool J and he is still holding down the game after all this time. And the beats did get me moving. I just wish there had been a little more “edge” , a little more “LL Cool J is hard as hell”.

Houston - It’s Already Written

Ξ August 23rd, 2004 | → 10 Comments | ∇ Music Reviews |

It took a couple of listens before I could form an honest opinion of Houston’s debut release “It’s Already Written“.

If folks are expecting the entire CD to be like the hit single “I Like That” they will be very disappointed. “I Like That” was the first release for a reason…its is about the best track on the CD. With that said, the CD is pretty good.

Houston’s voice is different from anything out there on the R&B circuit right now. Not silky smooth like Usher, but a little deeper, a little more distinct.

The much touted remake of the 80s classic “Let Me Love You Down” by Ready For The World doesn’t come close to touching the original, but is a pretty good rendition. There are some songs that will never be outdone with a remake, this is one of those songs.

But somewhere about the third or fourth time through, I started to really like this CD…the expectations wore off and I could listen to it and hear it for what it is…a pretty good debut from a young artist.

No, Not Rick James…

Ξ August 6th, 2004 | → 0 Comments | ∇ News & Reviews |

Now this really comes as a shocker…

LOS ANGELES - Funk legend Rick James, best known for the 1981 hit “Super Freak,” died Friday, apparently of natural causes, police said.

James died at 9:45 a.m. at a residence near Universal City, said Police Department spokeswoman Esther Reyes.

“We learned of his death after responding to a radio call,” Reyes said.

After his big hit, James’ fame began to fade as he became embroiled in drugs, legal problems and health issues.

Damn, I can not believe this…
