Progress I Can See

Come on boys and girls, everyone is doing it…National Novel Writing Month is upon us and way too many folks to thank have found this super cool graphical counter to keep track of my quest:

NaNoWriMo Progress Meter

1,964 words….maybe 4 hours of true writing time. Pretty good, but sadly, it may be about all I get to do.

More on that in a future post…

Chapter 3: Talking

Ξ November 5th, 2003 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Novel Idea |

Jax let the words he just heard sink in.

Never walk again? There had to be a mistake.

He looked back at Char, he saw a something in her eyes he had never seen before. He saw fear. Even when their parents died Char was not afraid. But now Jax knew that he was in trouble.

Jackson, Char is correct, the injury to your spinal cord has caused paralysis in your legs, Dr. Sullivan said. I need to run a few quick tests on you and then we can talk more.

I Guess Hip-Hop Does Cause Violence

Ξ November 4th, 2003 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Novel Idea, That's Just Wrong Dawg |

Maybe all those hip-hop/rap critics are right:

A Turkish man is dead after being stabbed for hawking Eminem t-shirts.

19-year-old Dilaver Akkurt thought the t-shirt vendor, Hayrettin Demir, was insulting his mother. Eminem means “my Emine” in Turkish.

Akkurt’s mother is named Emine and lives in the area that the vendor was selling shirts in.

Akkurt told Demir to stop yelling Eminem and to stop selling the t-shirts. Police believe that a friend of Akkurt’s stabbed Demir.

Akkurt is in custody and police are still looking for the killer.

Chapter 2: Growing Up

Ξ November 4th, 2003 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Novel Idea |

Anyone who knew Jackson Perth wouldl tell you how much of a firecracker he is. An avid mountain biker, Jackson was on his bike every chance he could find, but never missed his Sunday ride.

Jackson, or Jax as just about everyone called him, was an amazing physical specimen: Chiseled six-pack abs, legs like steel girders and arms and shoulders that seemed to carry the world.

Jax spent his days as a newspaper columnist, giving his opinion on everything from the local elections to the wars raging around the globe. And he was good. Jax had awards hanging on his walls, stored in boxes, stuffed in drawers…he had run out of space for them.

Chapter 1: Waking Up

Ξ November 3rd, 2003 | → 5 Comments | ∇ Novel Idea |

Jackson looked around, he could not figure out where he was or how he got there. All he knew was that there was a lot of noise. He tried to focus his eyes, but couldn’t shake the foggy view he had.

He started to realize that his vision was not right, his eyes weren’t focusing. He started to get scared.

Why couldn’t he remember anything? Why was he in this place? Where exactly was this place?

He tried to calm himself down, slowly regaining his composure. He strained to hear the noises and voices around him, trying to decipher what the voices were saying.

Ξ November 2nd, 2003 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Novel Idea |

Argh!!!!! I have already lost two days of writing time!!!!

I had better really get to cranking things out if I want to even come close to 50K words by Nov. 30.

I will start writing tonight and posting what I come up with each day…

ARGHHHH!!!!!

Ξ October 14th, 2003 | → 2 Comments | ∇ Novel Idea |

Man, with everything going on in my world I am not sure if NaNoWriMo is going to happen for me.

I am still proceeding as if I am going to have ANY free time next month, but I can already see the writing getting slapped up on the wall.

I will still try, no matter what, but I doubt I will get anywhere near 50,000 words :(

Bummer…

Great Book For The Novelist

Ξ October 3rd, 2003 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Novel Idea |

ScorpioGirl suggested I check out “The 38 Most Common Fiction Writing Mistakes (and how to avoid them)”

Boy was she ever right!

I went over to the library and picked it up to browse and ended up sitting down and reading the entire thing in one setting. Amazing information that, for me, went much further than just fiction writing. I can see many ways to utilize this in my editorial writing as well.

I can already see how much help NaNoWriMo is going to be to my overall writing skills.

Some Books To Help The Cause

Ξ September 29th, 2003 | → 1 Comments | ∇ Novel Idea |

I spent a good part of my day at Borders picking up some editing and journalism books to dust off the j-school skills and found in the same section a ton of books on novel and fiction writing.

No clue how good some of these are, but a few of them come highly recommended on the Borders site.

  1. Elements of Style (I had to pick this up in j-school many years back and I pick up each new version when it comes out. Definite must have for ANY writer.)
  2. Dynamic Characters: How to Create Personalities That Keep Readers Captivated
  3. Creating Unforgettable Characters
  4. How to Grow a Novel: The Most Common Mistakes Writers Make and How to Overcome Them
  5. How to Write a Damn Good Novel
  6. The First Five Pages: A Writer’s Guide to Staying Out of the Rejection Pile

Me? A Novelist?

Ξ September 22nd, 2003 | → 1 Comments | ∇ Novel Idea |

So how do you plan on spending your month of November? Looks like I will be writing a novel!

Andy over at the World Wide Rant posted up about the upcoming National Novel Writing Month:

National Novel Writing Month is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing November 1. The goal is to write a 175-page (50,000-word) novel by midnight, November 30.

Valuing enthusiasm and perseverance over talent and craft, NaNoWriMo is a novel-writing program for everyone who has thought fleetingly about writing a novel but has been scared away by the time and effort involved.

What fun! I am definitely all about this.

So I am making plans to spend the month of November writing my ass off. Maybe in the end something halfway coherent will trickle out of my head.

Wish me luck!!!
